I was on my way back home today from the Hoffmann Bird Club's annual banquet last night out in the Berkshires, and stopped at a few places along Route 2 today on this sunny, 50 degree day, looking for birds, butterflies, and spring ephemerals.
I started at 9 at the Mohawk Trail SF in Charlemont, where at about 10:30 I came across an Anglewing butterfly flying around on a sunny hillside next to the Cold River, next to a big stand of Mountain Laurel and under a tall canopy of hemlocks and white pines. I thought it was an Eastern Comma or Question Mark at first, but once it finally landed on a dead log about 20 feet uphill from me, I looked through my binoculars and saw that its underside was fully brown (missing the small white marks I would expect from either Eastern Comma or Question Mark) and had a white dash on the outer edges of the upperside of the wing. A Compton Tortoiseshell, and my first one ever!! I had my camera with me as well and tried to get a photo, but very frustratingly couldn't get the focus (or exposure, for that matter) to work properly before it very quickly flew off and didn't reappear.
A few other butterflies to report from the drive back home, and the final list from today:
Mohawk Trail SF, Charlemont - Compton Tortoiseshell - 1x Route 2, Charlemont - Cabbage White - 1x Route 2, Shelburne - Cabbage White - 1x Otter River SF, Winchendon - Spring Azure - 1x North Andover - American Lady - 1x
Bird highlights from today were a surprise early Blackburnian Warbler and Wood Thrush, Blue-Headed Vireo, Louisiana Waterthrush, and a small flock of Pine Siskins, all at Mohawk Trail SF, and a flock of 6 Red Crossbills at Otter River SF in Winchendon, MA.
