Everyone:

Today seemed to confirm that the 2017 Season appears to be ending ahead
of schedule. In the southern Sierra Nevada the Kern River both above and
below Lake Isabella is running at lower levels. It was cool and breezy and
few butterflies were seen before 11:30 AM and very little was seen after 3
PM. In contrast to 28 species found around Lake Isabella last Thursday,
September 28th, today October 2nd only had 17 species. Numbers of
individuals were also quite low for the most part. Usual species this time
of the year would usually be in the mid to high twenties. It appeared
freezes higher up have essentially ended the season above 8000' with a very
few exceptions. Butterflies seen:

Large White Skipper (Heliopetes ericetorum): 15 or so, all males and all
below 6000'

Juba Skipper (Hesperia juba): 7-8; one apparently entered a small window
opening in my car and hitched a ride home to Bakersfield, turning up in my
storage area at the back of my vehicle in my driveway, then flying off. We
call this an accidental import.

Western Branded Skipper (Hesperia colorado): 1 seen at Meadow Creek.

Woodland Skipper (Ochlodes sylvanoides). Approx. 16 seen but very local

Cabbage White (Pieris rapae)-1 seen at Meadow Creek at 5900'

Orange Sulphur (Colias eurytheme: saw 3

Acmon Blue (Plebejus acmon acmon): saw about 8, various locations.

Field Crescent (Phyciodes pulchella AKA campestris)-1 at Meadow Creek,
absent from Alder Creek

Mylitta Crescent (Phyciodes mylitta mylitta)-mid-elevations, saw about 6

Hoary Comma (Polygonia gracilis zephyrus)-one seen at 9000' just west of
Sherman Pass, very little snow seen on Mt. Whitney

Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui): 20+ various locations

American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis)-1 at Meadow Creek

West Coast Lady (Vanessa annabella)-12 to 14, from 4900' to 8000'. Most in
good condition. For some reason this species moves upslope on the W side of
the Sierra in the fall.

California Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis californica: two at Meadow Creek 2 hours
apart. Possibly this was one individual

California Sister (Adelpha californica) 8 or 9 seen, four at Ant Canyon
after 3:30 PM where there are a few oaks

California Ringlet (Coenonympha "tullia" california): 8-10, up to 6000'

Monarch (Danaus plexippus): Only 1 seen off Mtn. Hwy 99 just N of Tulare
County line near the Kern River. The high elevation aggregation up Sherman
Pass breaks up in about mid-September.

Species notably missing: White Checkered Skipper, Columbia Skipper absent
from hilltop above Heliport, Funereal Duskywing, Checkered White, Dainty
Sulphur (though common at Lake Isabella), Purplish Copper, Gray Hairstreak,
Marine Blue, Melissa Blue, Great Basin, Mormon and Zerene Fritillaries,
Buckeye (though common at Lake Isabella); Lorquin's Admiral, Great Purple
Hairstreak.

Best Wishes, Ken Davenport <kdavenport93306...> or
