Hi all,

Great thread! Sorry for taking so long to respond. I'd love to see responses from other group members from varying backgrounds and perspectives. In that vein, here is my humble summary of 2017...

After a fulfilling first full season of butterflying the year before, i went into 2017 very hopeful. Overall work and real life weighed heavier and my energy level seemed lower. More days off were spent at the computer under the ac and resting. I began to worry i was falling behind my previous year's accomplishments. About the same time i realized i had always put moths on the back burner. Kinda interesting, but hey there's a zillion of them and they almost all look alike. But i had taken the occasional pic of a diurnal moth here and there; and at the end of every long day there were many fluttering about the lights and on the walls outside my apartment and the adjacent empty apartments.

As a birder turned entophile, i am perhaps overly concerned about such things as listing, state and county firsts, etc. A quick look at John Fisher's data shows my county was next to last with only 44 of about 2,000 possible species listed. So i began basically just stepping outside at night with a camera for a few minutes now and again. I learned to identify a few, but readily admit i had to rely on Bamona and BugGuide for most of my ids. A few concern me, for example where the BugGuide reviewer felt comfortable with an id only to genus, whereas the Bamona person gave a species id. Things like that. And i still have a few to submit for id. That said i think i have some 56 species to add to the previous 44 for Garfield County. Of course I've been periodically sending photos and the required info to John Fisher and await his final analysis.

There's nothing here to turn science on its head. These guys were here all along; it's just that no one was looking and reporting. But that's what citizen science is all about; we can all increase overall knowledge, and often with very little effort.

All,

So, how was your 2017 lep year? Did you hit any milestones? Collect/photograph/observe any new species? Any great trips for leps? Get any published work done (academic papers, popular literature, books, pro bono work)? Expand your photographic files? Finally rearrange your collection or get through that stack of old enveloped specimens from a previous trip?

My 2017 was one of the best years, photographically speaking, that I've ever had. I took three major trips (Albuquerque twice and the LRGV), and I was out on many days locally in my home state of Oklahoma. I got 19 lifers on film (digital) and more coverage of several species that I only had 'grab shots' previously on slide film. I also photographed a lot of great behavior such as courtship, mating, ovipositing, and feeding. One of my 2017 goals was to get more coverage of immatures, predation, and larval food plants, which I was able to do. I also had a goal to get more close-ups of wing patterns (of living, unrestrained butterflies), so after I photographed the standard photos, I'd see how close I could get to the butterfly. Sometimes it was within inches. I also tried to get photos of multiple individuals such as at sap flows, mud puddles, or dung. Besides lep photography, I also photographed many other natural history subjects of all kinds. And on the business end of things, I got a few images published as well as a couple article/photo pieces. I also met many people in the field, mostly at random, that have a passion about butterflies/moths or natural history in general (or some that just liked to hike). It was fun to point out butterflies to people who were interested, but many had no idea about them (behaviors such as mud-puddling or probing scat, or how tiny some species are, or that not every one they see is a Monarch, etc.) All in all, I had a great year.

Here's an album of my 2017 butterfly wing detail photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bryanereynolds/albums/72157668165310309

For 2018, I have a few trips in mind. I still want to make the LRGV an annual thing, so that'll be my fall trip. I also have a tentative plan to hit Arizona in the summertime. And I plan on hitting Wisconsin also in the summer. In Oklahoma, I want to start working the eastern edge for all of the regular species that occur in that area. While there, a few on my 'hit-list' include Diana Fritillaries, King's Hairstreaks, Duke's Skippers, Mottled Duskywings, Lace-winged Roadside-Skippers, White M Hairstreaks, Eastern Pine Elfins, and more (some of these I do have on slide film, but I want updated digital coverage). Just like 2017, I want to get more coverage of immatures, larval food plants, and more habitat photos. I'm already eagerly planning and prepping for another great year.

How about you? What are your 2018 plans?

I hope this wets your whistle a little during these cold winter days...

Take care,
