Western Monarch Butterflies Continueto Decline=20

Annual censusof monarchs overwintering on the California coast reveals the =
lowest number ofbutterflies in recent years.=20

=C2=A0
PORTLAND,Ore.; February 2, 2018---An annual census of monarch butterflies o=
verwintering alongCalifornia=E2=80=99s coast reveals that populations in we=
stern North America are attheir lowest point in five years, despite recover=
y efforts. Volunteers with theXerces Society=E2=80=99s Western Monarch Than=
ksgiving Count visited more sites thispast year than have ever been counted=
since the survey began in 1997, yet theytallied fewer than 200,000 monarch=
s.=20

=C2=A0
=E2=80=9CThisyear=E2=80=99s numbers indicate a continuing decline in the mo=
narch population,=E2=80=9D noted SarinaJepsen, the Xerces Society=E2=80=99s=
endangered species program director.=E2=80=9CTwo decades ago, more than 1.=
2 million monarchs were recorded from far fewercoastal sites, and just last=
year nearly 300,000 monarchs were observed atalmost the same number of sit=
es.=E2=80=9D=20

=C2=A0

Populationestimates at individual sites also suggest that the western monar=
ch population hascontinued to shrink. Of the 15 sites which have been monit=
ored annually formore than two decades, 11 had lower counts than last year.=
=20

=C2=A0
=E2=80=9CCountsat some of the state=E2=80=99s largest sites were dramatical=
ly lower,=E2=80=9D said EmmaPelton, conservation biologist with the Xerces =
Society. =E2=80=9CPismo Beach State Parkwas down by 38%, a private site in =
Big Sur was down by 50%, and the MonarchButterfly Sanctuary in Pacific Grov=
e was down 57%, from 17,100 to just 7,350butterflies.=E2=80=9D=20

=C2=A0
Thefew sites in which monarch numbers remained stable or increased compared=
to2016, include Natural Bridges State Park, Moran Lake, and Lighthouse Fie=
ldState Park, all in Santa Cruz County.

=C2=A0
Monarchbutterflies that spend the winter within forested groves along Calif=
ornia=E2=80=99scentral coast are born on milkweed throughout western states=
, traveling to thecoast from as far away as Arizona, Utah, Idaho, and Washi=
ngton. The westernpopulation of monarchs has undergone a long term decline =
that mirrors the trendobserved at overwintering sites in the mountains of c=
entral Mexico, wheremonarchs from both the eastern and western U.S. also sp=
end the winter.=20

=C2=A0
Inthe late 1990s, a small group of monarch enthusiasts in California became=
concerned that there appeared to be fewer and fewer monarchs each year ands=
tarted the Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count. The WMTC is the longestrunni=
ng, most comprehensive effort to monitor overwintering monarchs inCaliforni=
a. The count occurs during a three-week period centered onThanksgiving. Bio=
logists, land managers, and citizen scientists visitoverwintering sites yea=
r after year to monitor the butterflies.=20

=C2=A0
Growingawareness and willingness to volunteer to aid in monarch conservatio=
n, coupledwith added Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count trainings for new v=
olunteers, ledto a successful monarch monitoring season. Nearly 150 volunte=
ers covered arecord 262 sites this year. Many participants also took part i=
n the secondannual New Year=E2=80=99s Count, the results of which are still=
being tallied and willbe reported in late-February.=20

=C2=A0
Two of thenewest regional coordinators organized volunteers to collect data=
from areasknown to historically host small numbers of overwintering monarc=
hs, but whichhave not been surveyed for the Thanksgiving count in over a de=
cade. SaulRiatiga surveyed sites in Baja, Mexico, extending the count into =
a region that isgenerally overlooked, and Rachel Williamsof the U.S. Fish a=
nd Wildlife Service visited remote sites in the Saline Valleyof the norther=
n Mojave Desert. Monarchs were successfully found in both areas.=20

=C2=A0
The SalineValley has some of the hardest to reach overwintering sites. Will=
iamsrecruited 34 surveyors intrepid enough to tackle rocky terrain and dens=
evegetation to learn more about these unique sites and the butterflies that=
inhabit them. A total of 145 monarchs were counted in 3 of the 5 canyonssur=
veyed.=C2=A0

=C2=A0
Thisfall and winter have been challenging seasons for the residents of Cali=
fornia, with unseasonably warm temperatures, wildfires, smoke, and mudslides=
; we do notyet know the impacts of these events on late season migrating an=
d breedingmonarchs.=20

=C2=A0
TheXerces Society received numerous reports of late season breeding, and fe=
wer clusters this fall, suggesting that some monarchs may have arrived at ov=
erwintering sites later andstayed active longer. The low estimate of monarc=
hs this year may be attributable,in part, to later than average clustering.=
Regardless, monarch butterflies areat risk of extinction and action is nee=
ded across their range to bring themback.=20

=C2=A0
Thecount is made possible by returning volunteers, new recruits, and dedica=
tedregional coordinators including Mia Monroe who co-coordinates the count =
withthe Xerces Society, Bill Shepard, Christina Garcia, Martha Nitzberg, Ni=
ck Stong,Jessica Griffiths, Charis van der Heide, Rick Hansen, Saul Riatiga=
, and RachelWilliams. Financial support for the 2017 WMTC came from the U.S=
..Fish and Wildlife Service and the San Diego Zoo.=20
