Todd:=C2=A0 About 10-15 years I think, but Brett Badeaux and Robert Gorman =
have found a few bairdii in the San Bernardinos in 2017 and 2018, supported=
by photos. They chose to keep their locality secret and I support them in =
their decision, and also chose to be non-specific in my post. Their occurre=
nce in the San Bernardino Mountains may be tenuous and overcollecting of la=
rvae can happen. The host plant for bairdii was on the hill where I saw the=
definite bairdii, just less of it and not yet well grown. This was one of =
the few long one day trips I have taken where the prime objective did not n=
ecessarily need to be collected. Had they been common, I might have taken o=
ne or two.=C2=A0=C2=A0 I did take vouchers of Satyrium auretorum spadix and=
Erynnis pacuvius callidus and a Queen because of the locality.

=C2=A0=20

Today, I got up before sunrise and headed for the San Bernardino Mountains =
to try a different main destination than the trip I took there two years ag=
o (Holcomb Valley and the Onyx Peak area). My main objective was not gettin=
g a big butterfly count for species, but seeing if I could find Baird's Swa=
llowtail. I would end up doing two areas: Hwy 18 at milepost 63.51 and in t=
he high country on forest service roads.=C2=A0 I collected Baird's Swallowt=
ail in number's in the late 1970's and 1980's so my plan was to relocate on=
e of those areas today. I collected the Hwy. 18 spot about 9:30-10 AM and a=
gain 4:15 PM-440 PM, I was not looking for bairdii there.

=C2=A0

The days finds:

Propertius Duskywing (Erynnis propertius): 4 seen in the high country

Pacuvius Duskywing (Erynnis pacuvius callidus)-around 20 in the high countr=
y

Funereal Duskywing (Erynnis funeralis)-2 in the high country.

Large White Skipper (Heliopetes ericetorum) common Hwy. 18, a few seen in t=
he high country.

Pale Swallowtail (Papilio eurymedon) 30 seen in the high country, partition=
ing chosen areas on hilltops and chasing away intruders.

Baird's Swallowtail (Papilio machaon bairdii): One showed up near the top o=
f the hill at 11:30 AM where I had success with bairdii in 1978, 1979 and a=
few times in the 1980's. It was immediately chased away by two Pale Swallo=
wtails. A possible second individual (a large black and yellow butterfly) a=
s I was preparing to leave a few minutes after 3 PM. It nearly flew into th=
e open liftgate of my car parked at the base of the hill. I can't be absolu=
tely sure the 2nd individual was not a Mourning Cloak, which seemed unlikel=
y at that spot.

Checkered White (Pontia protodice): 3 or 4 on the E side of the San Bernard=
ino's on Hwy. 18

Cabbage White (Pieris rapae)-1 also at Hwy. 18

California Dogface (Zerene eurydice) singletons; a male at Hwy. 18 and anot=
her in a residential area on a hill and another in the high country.

Nut Brown Hairstreak (Satyrium auretorum spadix): 5 in the early morning on=
buckwheats and a white flowering plant.

Echo Azure (Celastrina echo): several in the high country

Marine Blue (Leptotes marina): one on Hwy. 18

Boisduval's Blue (Plebejus icarioides evius): about 10 at mid and high elev=
ations.

Acmon Blue (Plebejus acmon)-2 at high elevations.

Bernardino Blue (Euphilotes Bernardino): 4 or 5 on Hwy. 18.

Coronis Fritillary (Speyeria coronis semiramis): only two at High elevation=
, common there 40 years ago

Edith's Checkerspot (Euphydryas editha augustina): one on small hilltop wit=
h paintbrush in the high country

California Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis californica)-one netted and released, a=
ll very worn

Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui): 10-12 in the high country, all very worn

West Coast Lady (Vanessa annabella) 2 or 3 on the hill with the eurymedon a=
nd the bairdii, not seen till after 2 PM

California Sister (Adelpha californica): 5 sightings off Hwy. 18

Queen (Danaus gilippus thersippus)-maybe the most improbable find of all. F=
our found at the same time on the late afternoon stop on Hwy. 18.
