Reviews of Callippe Fritillary in the San Francisco Bay Area usually inclu=
de some reference to its existence at Sears Point Ranch, Sonoma Co.,CA.
For this site, owned by Sonoma Land Trust, there is fairly good documentati=
on by photos on the internet until 2015, but since then little: probably th=
e
interested butterfliers stopped visiting.

Having been told that there was a big burn in 2017, we wanted to establish =
whether the butterfly has survived. We visited the reserve on 6-24-2019,=20
and walked the areas where the fritillaries could previously be found. With=
in the preserve, we did see 3 individuals at one favored isolated blackberr=
y
bush with flowers. Also, we saw another 2 individuals just across an easter=
n property line, this time using some oldish coyote mint flowers.

Conclusion: they are there, but not too many.

Photos are at flickr sebastopolbirder, flickr charlyhorse, and naturalist i=
cosahedron. With callippe, there is a general resemblance to individuals at=
San Bruno Mtn., near Brisbane, San Mateo Co.,CA, home to subspecies callip=
pe.=20
One individual has an unusually very light background (not due to old age).
