I climbed Horn Pond Mountain in Woburn today and found some interesting
butterflies. For the first time I saw Viceroys there, not one but at least
four! One was dead, draped over a goldenrod frond, with no sign of a crab
spider or assassin bug who could have snared it. There were also at least
four buckeyes, one of which was very dark. If I'd seen it in Texas, I
would be tempted to call it a Tropical Buckeye. And I had some Juniper
Hairstreaks. I found the first one just perched on some lowbush blueberry
as I reached for a snack during my hike. There were others in the short
junipers at the summit.

I haven't seen a Red-spotted Purple or Great Spangled Fritillary east of
495 yet this year. Is it just me, or are these really scarce this year?
