Thank you Paul. for the clarification about the difference between flight p=
eriods and breeding periods.=C2=A0 I am a beginner to all this, and wasn't =
able to clarify the difference myself.=C2=A0 Please let me know which Vanes=
sas have different flight periods from breeding periods.

Here is San Francisco, the American Lady lays its eggs on, I believe, the J=
ersey cudweed.=C2=A0 =C2=A0I don't know how this plant got here, but judign=
g by the name I don't think that it is native.

All of this started for me, when I pulled a weed in my garden, and. to my =
horror, I saw that there were 2=C2=A0 caterpillars feeding on it.=C2=A0 =C2=
=
=A0My horror was that I was destroying the caterpillars' food source. I re=
alized that I had to take these caterpillars (and 2 others) inside and rear=
ed them on a diet of Jersey cudweed, that grows in sidewalk cracks all over=
my neighborhood.=C2=A0 I did not try any of the other cudweeds that grow h=
ere, but harvested the Jersey cudweed from the sidewalks. That is how the o=
ther 2 caterpillars appeared.=C2=A0 All 4 are now chrysalides.=C2=A0 =C2=A0=
I intend to hopefully release the butterflies in about 8 days.=C2=A0 I do n=
ot intend to breed these butterflies,.

My husband also wants to cultivate this weed in place of the one that I ya=
nked out.=C2=A0 =C2=A0Habitat appears in the strangest places.=C2=A0 I have=
planted host and nectar plants in my garden,. While other butterflies visi=
t my garden plants, so far only the American Lady has given us caterpillars=
, as far as I know.=C2=A0=C2=A0I realize that I must now pay more careful a=
ttention to my host plants.

Thanks to everyone.
