Thank you all for all the observation reports in 2024 and to Mark Fairborther for his tireless work entering thousands of reports into the MBC database each year. In 2023 there were fewer than 4000 reports for the year, a low watermark for the last 25 years. In 2024 there were over 7700 reports, bringing the Club activity level back to pre-covid levels. In addition, we now have reports from every town in the state.
We have begun analyzing the data and more data is better. So we would like to see the high level of reports continue for 2025. So please keep those reports coming.
Also, there's a special interest in current documentation of two-spotted skipper locations as this species may be a candidate for State protection. Please report sightings as usual to MassLep or the Facebook page, or you can email Garry Kessler at <gkessler001...> .
Finally for anyone looking for somewhere new to explore, check the Club website for a list of towns that haven't been visited recently. There may be one near you.
And, if you are interested, there's an example of the species accounts that we've been working on in the latest issue of the journal. Check out the Hickory Hairstreak write up.
Thank you again for all the reports.
Garry Kessler and Michael Newton
