Greetings, Interesting. The West Coast Painted Ladies also migrate. This migration is = hard to observe because the butterflies usually fly at considerable altitud= e, but this varies with conditions. A few years ago, there was really good = year for observation and they were all over the place in Anza Borrego Deser= t State Park during one of my usual early spring visits..=C2=A0 Monarchs get all the credit. Perhaps they are more charismatic. A little more reading material is appended below.. Cheers,Frank Vanessa cardui | Art Shapiro's Butterfly Site

The West Coast Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa annabella) migration typical= ly involves several generations of butterflies moving north from Mexico to = the Pacific Northwest in the spring and south in the fall, according to the= Natural History of Orange County. This migration is often triggered by hea= vy winter rains and the subsequent growth of host plants in the desert, as = noted by the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources. While the Painted Lady (= Vanessa cardui) is known for its long-distance migrations, including transo= ceanic flights, the West Coast Lady has a more localized range and follows = a similar north-south migration pattern within the Pacific West. [1, 2, 3, = 4, 5]=20 Key Points about West Coast Painted Lady Migration: [1, 2, 6] =20 - Northward Movement: In the spring, the West Coast Painted Lady butterf= lies migrate northward from their wintering grounds in Mexico to the Pacifi= c Northwest for breeding. [1, 2, 6]=20 - Southward Return: In the fall, successive generations of butterflies r= eturn south to their wintering areas in Mexico and the Pacific Southwest. [= 2, 3, 7]=20 - Seasonal Variations: The timing and magnitude of these migrations can = vary depending on weather patterns, particularly rainfall, which influences= the availability of host plants. [1, 7, 8]=20 - Host Plants: West Coast Painted Ladies primarily feed on Cheeseweed (M= alva parviflora) and other mallows and nettles. [2]=20 - Localized Range: The West Coast Lady is found primarily on the West Co= ast, from British Columbia to Baja California. [2]=20 - Spotted Wings: West Coast Painted Ladies can be distinguished from oth= er Vanessa species by the orange spot on the black tip of their forewings. = [5]=20 - Multiple Broods: West Coast Painted Ladies have several broods through= out the year. [2]=20 For a more detailed look at the migration patterns and key features of the = Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), which is more widely known for its long-dist= ance migrations, you can explore resources like the Iowa State University a= nd the Nature publication on painted lady migrations.
