This morning I birded and butterflied along Mid-Pines Road south of
Raleigh, and waited until after 9:30 for it to be warm enough to check out
the long stretch of milkweed planting at the Agro-Ecology Farm. The weather
was cloudless and with little wind -- perfect for butterflies and
sunburns! Here is my list, which includes roadside plants along the dirt
portion of this road:

Black Swallowtail 1 male; E. Tiger and others possibly between broods?
Orange Sulphur 3
Cabbage White 25 checked all for Checkereds, but no luck; however, did
see much of its host plant pepperweed (Lepidium) along roadsides
Gray Hairstreak 1 fresh
E. Tailed-Blue 1 female
Monarch 2 low? Hundreds of Common and Butterfly milkweeds in bloom;
hundreds more vegetative
Variegated Fritillary 30
American Lady 8
Common Buckeye 8
Silver-spotted Skipper 3
Fiery Skipper 1
Dun Skipper 1
DION SKIPPER 1 I tend to see one here each late May or June, but always
nice in Wake
