Today I went to Edwin Wilder WMA in Norton and Myles Standish State Forest in Carver. My intent was to prove that what I call "bigs" actually exist in the south coast of the state. These would be anything Swallowtail, Red-spotted Purple, Monarch, etc. So far I haven't even seen a Spicebush Swallowtail down here.
The temps were a bit cooler today with highs around 80 and hazy sun.
At Edwin Wilder, where I always see bigs, there were only a couple Red-spotted Purples flying, but no Monarchs or Swallowtails at all.
20+ Sulfurs (sp) 30+ European Skippers 1 Least Skipper 1 Peck's Skipper 2 Red-spotted Purples
At Myles Standish, I had hoped to find a Wild Indigo Duskywing. A slam dunk species typically. Alas, there were only 2 Duskywings total. One was so beat up I had no clue what it was and one flew off into the woods before I could see what it was.
2 Duskywings (sp) 3 Red-spotted Purples 1 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail flyover 1 worn but very active Frosted Elfin 3 Common Ringlets 2 Indian Skippers
Both locations today and both of yesterday's locations had no Little Wood Satyrs which I would have expected to see. Not that that is a species of concern in any way. Just a strange observation.
