Sent too early, before I finished the list!!!!
From 12:30 - 2:15 this afternoon, Lori Arent and I walked the grounds of the NC Museum of Art in western Raleigh, under mostly cloudy skies and a temperature about 83 degrees. There are many dozens of flower species in bloom in various places, from the edge of the parking lot, to "Sculpture Hill" and down to the pond area. Most are planted or seeded, and some species that normally bloom in fall are already flowering now (suggesting cultivars). However, there are no solid, planted stands like zinnias yet -- the flowers are scattered amid grasses and other vegetation. Here is our list:
E. Tiger Swallowtail 2 Sleepy Orange 2 Orange Sulphur 1 Cabbage White 6 Gray Hairstreak 2 E. Tailed-Blue 1 Variegated Fritillary 8 lots of Common and Butterfly milkweeds in bloom, bit no Monarchs now American Lady 2 Common Buckeye 3 Pearl Crescent 18 Silver-spotted Skipper 1 Common Checkered-Skipper 2 Horace's Duskywing 1 male WILD INDIGO DUSKYWING 1 fresh, male I think; on Sculpture Hill, but last year we only saw a few near the parking lot Fiery Skipper 7 SOUTHERN SKIPPERLING 1 not too surprising, as it has been found here in past years, but this one was on White Clover down by the pond; usually seen around Sculpture Hill.
