On 6/24/25 I tried to scout a Breeding Bird Survey route in the portion of
Great Dismal Swamp NWR in NC. I drove approximately 5 mi. before having to
turn around due to overgrown roads, and hadn't seen many butterflies other
than a concentration of Pearl Crescents along a shadier stretch of road. On
the way back I noticed two small buttonbush shrubs loaded with flowers and
Lace-winged Roadside-Skippers that I had completely missed on the drive in!
A couple other skipper species were mixed in, including a Reversed
Roadside-Skipper, apparently the second report from Gates County and the
first in several decades. I saw one in the same general area in 2014, also
near the county line, that time on the Camden Co. side. Lists from Gates
Co. and Camden Co. portions of the NWR below.
