He was a long-time member of the Hampshire Bird Club.=C2=A0 He lead field= =20 trips and participated in many Christmas Bird Counts, hawk watches, and=20 nighthawk counts over the years. He was a leading force in the Massachusetts Butterfly Club, organizing=20 and leading trips, and overseeing printing of field cards and producing=20 of tee shirts and hats.=C2=A0 He participated in 4th of July Butterfly Coun= ts=20 each year. For many years, his garden plots were the center of butterfly activity=20 in the Northampton Community Garden, where his verbena's purple stand=20 was a beacon for butterflies.
