Folks,

This morning I covered Mid-Pines Road, Inwood Road, beside and behind
Treasuring Chest Church, and Yates Pond -- south of Raleigh, under
relatively mild and partly cloudy skies. Mid-Pines was very dusty (no rain
since about Aug. 14), and most roadsides were again mowed the day before, a
constant "PITA" that the farm staff seems to enjoy for "beautification".
Still, there were enough areas of blooming Cat's-ear (*Hypochaeris radicata*)
and a few other things to provide some decent butterfly totals. There were
also lots of things nectaring on Virgin's-bower (*Clematis virginiana*) at
the marsh bridge at Yates Pond. Here are my totals:

Black Swallowtail 1 female
E. Tiger Swallowtail 20 all over the *Clematis*
Sleepy Orange 3
Cabbage White 1 still a lull between broods?
Monarch 9
Variegated Fritillary 8 low, but not that much nectar for them
Viceroy 3 on the *Clematis*
Red-spotted Purple 1
American Lady 1 fresh; on zinnias at the church; tough to find in much of
August
Common Buckeye 5 also low
Pearl Crescent 2
Silver-spotted Skipper 8 mostly on the *Clematis*
COMMON SOOTYWING 2 scattered along Inwood; colonies in the area but alway
a good find
Common Checkered-Skipper 50 tons behind church and a few other places
Horace's Duskywing 1 church zinnias
Fiery Skipper 85
Sachem 1 worn male; tougher to find here each year
Zabulon Skipper 2 wooded tunnel north of fields
Clouded Skipper 50 tons on *Centrosema* in wooded tunnel area
SOUTHERN SKIPPERLING 1 fresh; on Cat's-ear along Mid-Pines; first along
this road in a few years
Ocola Skipper 3 only on *Clematis* at Yates Pond
