Folks,

Yesterday (Aug. 20), Jeff Pippen had to drive to Bladen County to work with
a Jones Lake State Park (JONE) ranger/staff to set up a Carolina Butterfly
Monitoring Survey route(s) at the park. So, Lori Arent and I rode down and
back with him, and Al Hooks came down from Johnston County. The
weather was mostly overcast until about 1100, but afterward the sun came
out and we had mostly sunny conditions in the afternoon and temps in the
mid-80s. We saw a few things at JONE, but after a quick lunch we drove a
number of roads, mostly dirt, in the nearby Bladen Lakes State Forest
(BLSF). Late in the day we stopped by Suggs Mill Pond Game Land (SMP). To
be honest, there were few good nectar plants anywhere, especially at the
first two sites, with the best source being considerable *Vernonia
angustifolia* in a 2025 burned area at SMP. Note the quite small numbers
of butterflies for a group of 4 people over 7+ hours of effort!

I have flagged which ones of these were seen at JONE by ***, for State
Parks' records, but no numbers are provided.

Black Swallowtail 1 SMP
Spicebush Swallowtail 15 ***
Palamedes Swallowtail 60 ***
E. Tiger Swallowtail 1 dark female ***
Little Yellow 4 decent total a single one at ***
Sleepy Orange 22 ***
Orange Sulphur 1 albino SMP, a bit of a surprise there
Cloudless Sulphur 4 *** very low
Red-banded Hairstreak 3
Gray Hairstreak 4 ***
E. Tailed-Blue 15
Monarch 4 ***
Gulf Fritillary 1 bit of a surprise, quick fly-by at BLSF
Variegated Fritillary 10
Common Buckeye 35 ***
Pearl Crescent 4 ***
Southern Cloudywing 3 BLSF
Silver-spotted Skipper 1
Horace's Duskywing 1
Zarucco Duskywing 5 most or all at BLSF
Delaware Skipper 1 a surprise BLSF, edge of abandoned airstrip
Fiery Skipper 5 ***
Whirlabout 1 female BLSF
Lace-winged Roadside-Skipper 2 *** one in the park and one at BLSF
Swarthy Skipper 1 SMP
Clouded Skipper 2 seems low
