Hey Butterfliers
Yesterday afternoon I visited some of the areas of Alligator River NWR off rt 264 on Dare County mainland to check out the nectar sources for some upcoming field trips. It's been dry, some areas weren't in full bloom (too bad Hurricane Erin didn't contribute anything but wind). Butterflies were mainly on the Bitterweed. Other nectar sources were Partridge Pea, Chinese Bushclover (not in full bloom), a few Blue Mist flowers and small patch of Joe Pye Weed. Many other roads to check this week and hoping NO mowing is taking place this month (refuge is struggling so relying on volunteers to mow when they can unfortunately).
I did spend 3 hrs on a 2 mile stretch of salt marsh habitat but didn't have a large variety or big #s of butterflies. Did have huge #s of mosquitoes The following is all I noted:
Palamedes Swallowtail 5 Cloudless Sulphur 6 Gray Hairstreak 1 Pearl Crescent 1 (seems crazy to see just one) C. Buckeye 4 Tawny-edged Skipper 1 Southern Broken Dash 4 Delaware Skipper 1 Aaron's Skipper 2 Broadwing Skipper 6 Salt Marsh Skipper 35
Still the world is an amazing place! Audrey Whitlock S Nags Head NC
