Francis Marion National Forest continues to impress with its unrivaled diversity and abundance in this area. Road 212 from Highway 45 to forest road 204 (about 5 miles; southern half of 212 is by far the best; we carefully inspected about 1 mile of it). Berkeley County, SC. Pipevine Swallowtail 5 Black Swallowtail 5 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail 14 plus one dark individual Spicebush Swallowtail 1 Palamedes Swallowtail 67 unidentified dark swallowtails 6 Cloudless Sulphur counted 100 and saw a couple of dozen more Little Yellow 45 Sleepy Orange 1 Gray Hairstreak 2 Little Metalmark 1 Gulf Fritillary 19 Pearl Crescent 15 Common Buckeye 6 Red-spotted Purple 3 Carolina Satyr 1 unidentified (Carolina or Intricate) satyrs 3 Georgia Satyr 1 Monarch 29 Southern Cloudywing 3 Horace's Duskywing 10 Zarucco Duskywing 2 unidentified duskywings 3 Clouded Skipper 12 Fiery Skipper 1 Southern Broken-Dash 8 Byssus Skipper 2 Yehl Skipper 3 Dion Skipper 1 Dun Skipper 3 Twin-spot Skipper 92 Ocola Skipper 4 unidentified dark skippers 9
Sylphium sp. (rosinweed) was the main attraction. Black-eyed Susan, Hyptis, Pickerelweed, Sneezeweed, and loosestrife (Lythrum) were less visited. This road is one of several parts of the forest that will be covered in the 33rd annual FMNF Count on Sunday August 31.
