Hello Butterfliers.
The 31st annual Wake County Butterfly Count was held on Friday, August 15. We had 13 official counters in 8 groups traipse across our sites on a warm partly cloudy day. The temperature peaked in the upper 80s, so most of us didn=E2=80=99t wither from the heat. We were able to tally 48 species which= is about our count=E2=80=99s average. Total numbers were 2069 individuals, whi= ch exceeds the previous high by 300 individuals, but a quarter of those tallied were Fiery Skipper (695).
Most abundant butterflies were the aforementioned Fiery Skipper, then Sleepy Orange (221), Common Buckeye (174) and Silver-spotted Skipper (174).
Notable species include: Hoary Edge (2) at Durant Nature Preserve and Umstead State Park; Tawny Emperor (1) at Durant; Common Wood-Nymph (1), Southern Cloudy-wing (1), Zarucco Duskywing (3), Swarthy (15), Crossline (4) and Byssus Skipper (13) at Umstead State Park; Southern Pearly-eye (3) and Gemmed Satyr (2) at Horseshoe Farm; Eufala Skipper (3) at NCSU Arboretum. Southern Skipperlings (2) were also observed. Anglewings were in short supply, but American Lady (5) and Red-spotted Purple (7) were found by several groups. A remarkable number of Gulf Fritillary (10) brightened the path for several counters.
Thanks to those who helped: Jeff Pippin, Lior Carlson, Ryan Chafee, Harry LeGrand, Lori Arent, Lori White, Thomas Reed, Deborah Fowler, Chris Goforth, Tracy Feldman, Chris Moorman and John Gerwin who led several parties on butterfly watching hikes including: Rachel Woods, Kathy Lagana, Jennifer MacKenzie, Melissa McGaw, Grace Sigmon, Gracie Eddins, Annemarie Carberry and Ashley Lamb..
