Arlene and I spent an hour or so at Doughton midday, at the Bluffs in Alleghany County. Approx list below. High meadows still with lots of flowers, butterflies especially attracted to thistle.
E. Tiger Swallowtail 25 (many very large, about 1/4 black form) Pipevine Swallowtail 5 Cabbage White 7 Clouded Sulphur 4 American Copper 8 Summer Azure 1 E. Tailed-blue 5 Var. Fritillary 2 Meadow Fritillary 3 Great Sp. Fritillary 7 Aphrodite Fritillary 5 Common Buckeye 1 Pearl Crescent 15 Red-spotted Purple 3 Gemmed Satyr 1 (slightly surprising at 3740' elevation atop the Bluffs, but not unprecedented) Common Wood-Nymph 2 Monarch 2 Sachem 4 Unidentified grass skipper 1 (not a sachem)
