Title

West Texas Prairie Restoration and Arthropod Biodiversity=E2=80=94Lubbock L=
ake
National Historic Landmark: A Case Study.

Abstract

Grassland ecosystems in semi-arid regions are often impoverished in
arthropod diversity when replaced by woody shrub cover. At Lubbock Lake
National Historic Landmark, West Texas, a restoration project begun 25
years ago converted a mesquite/yucca-dominated landscape back to
short-grass prairie. Although no arthropod baseline data were collected
prior to restoration, the extant plant community now includes a rich
assemblage of native grasses and forbs=E2=80=94conditions known to support =
higher
arthropod biodiversity. Recent citizen science observations via iNaturalist
show a large diversity of taxa among insects, spiders, and related
arthropods. These findings suggest that long-term prairie restoration in
semi-arid landscapes can substantially enhance arthropod richness and
ecological complexity. This case study underscores the importance of plant
community recovery for arthropod biodiversity, and highlights the value of
observational community science in monitoring restoration outcomes.

Bio

Catherine C. Galley is trained as an architect, urban designer, and
planner, with degrees from the =C3=89cole des Arts D=C3=A9coratifs (Paris),=
=C3=89cole
d=E2=80=99Architecture Paris-La Villette, Harvard University (M.Arch. in Ur=

Design), Rutgers University (Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Policy
Development), and George Mason University School of Law (J.D.). She has
taught at Rutgers and Texas Tech, contributed to major research on sprawl,
smart growth, and regional development, and published widely on urbanism
and cultural policy. Since retiring in 2015, she has reconnected with her
childhood love of the natural world through iNaturalist, where she
documents arthropods with the same observational curiosity that shaped her
artistic and academic work.
