Folks, Today (3/1/2026) I was at Needmore Game Lands in Swain County collecting water samples for a research project on microplastics. While parked in a gravel lot, I saw the following (click the link to see the specimens in iNaturalist): Morning Cloak - 1 Eastern Comma <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/340819169> - 1 Anglewing species - 3 Summer Azure <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/340819806> (I think the i.d. is correct, but not 100%) - 4
At my house today in Macon County, I saw the following: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - 1 White-M Hairstreak <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/340818996> - 1
The hairstreak was a nice surprise - perched on the path to the garage. Freshly emerged, but unfortunately with deformed wings.
Mostly sunny with temps in the 60s today. Spring is in the air. . . and on the wing! All sightings were FOY except the anglewings.
Cheers, Jason Love Otto, NC
