It has been a very slow start for butterflies at the Carolina Sandhills NWR, Chesterfield County, SC. The Pixie Moss is at 20% bloom but that should increase rapidly over the next few days. My favorite Brown Elfin site was thinned last year and is something of a mess post-logging. The Pixie Moss loves the disturbance. No butterflies on the Pixie Moss so far.

I found a small patch of early Chickasaw Plum which rescued my day with a nectaring Question Mark, a briefly nectaring Tiger Swallowtail, and a fly-by Azure.

Question Mark 1
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail 1
Azure species 1
