With warm, sunny weather I planned to run my CarBMP route on Chowan Swamp
Game Land near the Wiccacon River on 4/12, but Elisa, the kids, & I got
pleasantly held up with good bird, dragonfly, and butterfly activity at a
lupine site in southeastern VA near the state line (no Frosted Elfins, but
nectaring Lace-winged & Carolina Roadside-Skippers). By the time we got
into NC it was mid-afternoon, so instead of doing the route we explored
some of the Chowan Swamp GL roads on the south side of the Meherrin River
near Parkers Ferry, and I returned to Hertford Co. yesterday, 4/13, a
windier day, to run the route. Lists below, NC highlight across the 2 days
was certainly at least 2 (and probably 4-5) Gemmed Satyrs, my first of the
year and new for Hertford Co. according to the Butterflies of NC website.
