Today, I returned to the Whitehall Tract of the Whitehall Plantation Game Land, which I visited yesterday. I came back to get better looks at some butterflies and dragonflies I saw yesterday, specifically, the Carolina Satyrs I reported. Last night, while looking at online pics and field marks of Carolina and Intricate Satyrs, I thought I might have actually seen an Intricate Satyr or two.
Today, I saw one individual of these two satyr species, and I was able to identify it as an Intricate Satyr. This ID was based on the post-median band on the hind wing of Intricate Satyr being straight at the costal end; In Carolina Satyr, this post-median band bends inward away from the top large black eyespot. There are some good pics online showing this difference. On my personal list from yesterday I am changing the two satyrs I saw to Carolina/Intricate Satyrs.
Today I walked 4.3 miles and saw 18 species, including an unidentified cloudywing. The weather was sunny and 84F. My list is below. Good butterflying.
Zebra Swallowtail 5 Spicebush Swallowtail 2 Palamedes Swallowtail 1 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail 1 Red-banded Hairstreak 1 American Snout 4 Gulf Fritillary 2 Common Buckeye 2 Pearl Crescent 10 Southern Pearly-eye 3 Creole Pearly-eye 1 Appalachian Brown 2 Intricate Satyr 1 cloudywing sp. 1 Silver-spotted Skipper 1 Lace-winged Roadside-Skipper 1 Clouded Skipper 1 Least Skipper 1
