My first= stop was a known population of Baptisia alba which often attracts interest= ing native bees. Yesterday afternoon, too my surprise, a Lace-winged Roadsi= de-skipper was hanging from a blossom. As I watched the Lace-winged a seco= nd skipper landed on an adjacent Baptisia. It was an early Clouded Skipper= . An open successional field that often has Yellow Thistle had none and I fou= nd nothing. The roads and field areas are very, very dry. No surprise. I then happened upon a large patch of Vetch and clover along Grassy Island = Road. I stopped and found a concentration of very fresh-looking Variegated= Fritillaries flocking the clover. I checked my past posts on NC Parks and= found I have reported large numbers of Variegated Fritillaries in mid-Apri= l in the Pee Dee NWR in prior years. Yesterday there were too many to count= . My attention was immediately captured by a handsome male Checkered White ma= le, also on the clover. After I had good photos on the Checkered White, I = concentrated on 2 small dark butterflies playing tag. These were well-mark= ed Common Sootywings. I also photographed a FOY Fiery Skipper, also in the= clover. Finally I tried to concentrate on FOY Common Checkered Skippers t= hat were scattered among the clover blossoms and also difficult to accurate= ly count. Given the very dry conditions and the absence of butterflies along normally= damp roadways, this patch of concentrated butterfly activity was a pleasan= t surprise. I came away with 5 FOY species raising my 2026 species list to= 56. Zebra Swallowtail 3 Spicebush Swallowtail 4 Variegated Fritillary 50+ All over the clover. Groups of 2,3,4. I have never seen this concentratio= n American Lady 2 Pearl Crescent 12 Cloudless Sulfur 3 On vetch Orange Sulfur 2 Sleepy Orange 8 Cabbage White 1 Eastern Tailed-blue 5 In the clover.
