Folks,
This morning Tom Howard and I had some back and forth messaging to make sure any new species account on the website was going to work properly, including inserting it in the proper place, getting page numbers correct, and making sure the PDF would fit on one page. Also, we had to make sure the downloadable checklist was correct.
So, you can go to the website: https://auth1.dpr.ncparks.gov/nbnc/a/accounts.php
and search for Iryna's Azure. In addition to the species account, you will note that Tom has posted the two photos from Alan Kneidel of the one NC record known so far -- from April in 2021. As you might have read, BOTH top side and bottom side photos of a potential Iryna's Azure must be taken, and then carefully scrutinized. The single record shows on the flight chart, as well.
To see the SC and overall Carolina range, so far, click on View PDF on the species page. Remember that the species account, map, and flight chart refer just to NC, though most of the information on any species applies to the Carolinas, as well.
This pushes the NC species total to now 178. It is too early for me/us to know what species in the recently split Pepper and Salt Skipper complex occur in NC, though the range map in the paper that described the four species shows two as being in NC. However, we have no idea of the spread of the range, abundance, etc., of them. No species accounts and maps will be written until much more is published.
If you see errors or things to edit on the species account, please reply back to me. Thanks. Also, feel free to send us additional verified photos (from SC or other states) so that we can have a few more on the web page. Especially needed are photos of an azure in flight, showing the "smeared" smooth blue upper side of a male; the photo of the upper side on the web page is a blow-up of the scale pattern.
