It takes me 90 minutes to drive from home to Old CC Road, one of few= access points to these game lands. As I started the short ascent up Old C= C Road I was surprised and disappointed to see an empty logging truck in my= rearview mirror. The game land has conducted a post-Helene timber salvage= operation along the lower sections of Old CC Road, an operation I thought = was complete. Apparently, it is not. A small parking area above a stream = crossing on Old CC Road (where I used to find butterflies in the gravel) is= now the entrance to an ongoing logging operation. Although disappointed, I hoped the remainder of Old CC Road might be produc= tive. That was not to be. About 300 meters up Old CC Road, a fallen tree = completely blocked the road. With no turn-around available, I backed up to= wards the logging entrance. As I did, a distinctively small Mottled Duskyw= ing appeared on the driver's side of the road. Clearly a gift. As Mottled = Duskywings often do, the butterfly was happy to slowly walk in little circl= es with wings fully spread and give me all sorts of good looks. My short visit to Old CC Road left me the entire afternoon to visit Roper H= ollow Road. While Roper Hollow Road is freshly graveled post-Helene and in= good shape for a forest road, it is very narrow. The first 2 miles climb = about 1,000 feet and lengthy stretches have no pull-offs. You just have to= pray you do not meet another visitor. And be prepared to back up. I did = not meet another vehicle in my 3 plus hours on Roper Hollow Road. I enjoye= d scores of roadside Fourleaf Milkweed but the many blossoming plants did n= ot attract many butterflies. A Pipevine Swallowtail, a Northern Duskywing,= and a male and female Zabulon skipper were the only lingering "customers". I did have a fresh-looking fly-by Monarch that I hoped would check out the = milkweed but it did not. The Monarch was in Burke County, the lower portio= n of Roper Hollow Road. I was rewarded with a couple of bright orange Flame= Azaleas as well as plenty of blossoming Mountain Laurel.
