Francis Marion National Forest, Charleston County, SC. FR 211 from Hwy45 north to FR 204., about 6 miles driving, 4 stops- walked about 0.5 miles. May 3, 2026. 12:50-2:50 pm. Temp: high 60's, sunny. Dennis and Wendy Allen Pipevine Swallowtail 1 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail 1 Palamedes Swallowtail 16 Pearl Crescent 9 Common Buckeye 3 unidentified Pearly-eye 1 Intricate Satyr 1 Monarch 3 Silver-spotted Skipper 1 Southern Cloudywing 18 Confused Cloudywing 1 (FOY) unidentified cloudywings 4 Swarthy Skipper 2 (FOY) Clouded Skipper 8 Least Skipper 1 Tawny-edged Skipper 2 (FOY) Whirlabout 1 Southern Broken-Dash 12 (FOY) Northern Broken-Dash 3 (FOY) unidentified broken-dashes 4 Little Glassywing 16 (FOY) Zabulon Skipper 1 female Dun Skipper 2 Twin-spot Skipper 12 (FOY) unidentified dark skippers 13 First major showing of skippers of the year. Most skippers and cloudywings were on one large patch of Self Heal (Prunella, first time seen this year). Almost as many skippers and all large butterflies were on the first Red Thistles to bloom (<5% of buds open, peak will be during the next two weeks) - scattered along the route. Zabulon and Confused Cloudywing were on a planted field, perhaps Wild Radish. |
