Santee Delta East. Georgetown County, SC. Walked 1.0 mile from the Highway 17 parking area to the first cross-dike. May 14, 2026. 2:30-3:45 pm. mostly sunny, 72 F. Dennis Allen Black Swallowtail 2 unidentified dark swallowtails 2 Palamedes Swallowtail 1 Gray Hairstreak 2 Variegated Fritillary 1 Pearl Crescent 3 American Lady 2 Common Buckeye 1 Silver-spotted Skipper 5 Horace's Duskywing 1 Tropical Checkered-Skipper 2 (FOY, males) Clouded Skipper 1 Fiery Skipper 1 Whirlabout 1 male Rare Skipper 3 (FOY, confirmed by Dennis Forsythe) Broad-winged Skipper 44 At least 200 Pickerelweed flower stalks emerged in recent days and butterflies responded. All but the Common Buckeye, Variegated Fritillary, Pearl Crescents, and Tropical Checkered-Skippers were nectaring on Pickerelweed. A couple of Broad-winged Sk. were on Vervain. Not much else blooming. This was the first survey done at the newly established Santee Delta East route for the Carolina Butterfly Monitoring Program that Jeff Pippen oversees. |
