I was very surprised to see a Checkered White at Elk Mountain Overlook this morning, at ~3800 feet elevation along the Blue Ridge Parkway in northwestern NC. They're tough to find up here and usually in the river valleys. I wondered whether some piedmont butterflies have been wandering in search of less drought-stricken areas.
