I was at a weedy field this morning near Edwards Mill Road in Raleigh where we have had a large colony of Southern Skipperlings in the past few years. I saw none, but I saw a white fly that I think was a Checkered. I DID see some Lepidium in the field, its hostplant. Of course, Cabbage Whites are scattered everywhere in Raleigh in open country and gardens, but I did not see any for sure this morning. I also saw a lot of Bull Thistle (Cirsium vulgare) in bud, and this exotic can be a good butterfly magnet when in bloom -- if not mowed down first!! So, I'll try again in a few days, AFTER we get some rain! I am getting concerned about grass skippers in NC and how they have fared over these last NINE months of severe and extreme drought (mid-August to May 20). Yes, I know that in NC, most "native grass" skippers don't really start flying until mid-May -- like Dun, Swarthy, Crossline, Little Glassywing, broken-dashes, etc., so maybe things are just slow because of the heat and drought. Time will tell. As usual, coastal SC, especially Francis Marion National Forest, seems to have plenty of these guys in spring, even if down in numbers in 2026 so far.
