While grounds keeping at Lynaire Kennels in Craven County "very large Pearl=
Crescent" on white clover blooms caught my eye.=C2=A0 It flew up and perch=
ed upon a nearby wax myrtle bush where I was able to get a very good look a=
t it.=C2=A0 I knew immediately that it was not a Pearl Crescent nor a local=
species. My phone and net were in my truck and I ran to fetch both. Upon r=
eturn, the butterfly was gone.=C2=A0 I searched the general area for about =
an hour to no avail.
I always have a copy of Glassberg's "Swift Guide to Butterflies" in the tru=
ck and searched through the pictures.=C2=A0 The butterfly I saw was definit=
ely a female Silvery Checkerspot.=C2=A0 The past couple days has been very =
windy out of the north and northwest and I assume this was a windblown stra=
y.=C2=A0 Sure wish I was able to catch it.=C2=A0 With luck, maybe she will =
deposit some eggs since the is no shortage of wild aster species.
