I finally flushed a Southern Skipperling this morning (Wake County) at the extensive weedy/barren area along Edwards Mill Road in Raleigh, a site that is used mainly in fall for State Fair shuttle parking. I had made a few trips here earlier in 2026, with no results. In the last few years, we have had a sizable colony here and in front of nearby Schenck Forest. With the extreme drought currently in Raleigh, this field is crunchy, but there is still a lot of White Clover in bloom. I saw just one on it, but this was just in about 5 minutes of walking. Most of the field is growing up in 2-foot tall Sericea, a major weed. There is a lot of Bull Thistle yet to bloom. I keep hoping for a Checkered White to show up, as they favor barrens with Pepperweed (Lepidium species), which is fairly common here. No luck yet.

PS -- I can't recall seeing any iNat photos or carolinaleps postings for Skipperling so far in 2026. Hopefully, when we get some rain, eventually, the colony will start booming again. (Raleigh is at record low rainfall for the first 5 months of the year, with no rain in sight.)
