Yesterday, I took advantage of the great weather and spent the day walking at the Carlisle Cranberry Bog in Carlisle, then on to Broad Meadow Brook in Worcester and finally a walk through Breakneck Hill in Southborough.
It was cool and moist (from overnight rain and/or heavy dew) in the morning at the Cranberry Bog in Carlisle. I saw:
2 Pearl Crescent 1 Peck's Skipper 4 Common Ringlet 1 Painted Lady
At Broad Meadow Brook, in Worcester, I saw:
2 Hoary-edged Skipper 2 Zabulon Skipper 2 Long Dash Skipper 3 Tawny-edged Skipper 4 Peck's Skipper 2 Hobomok Skipper 4 Silver-spotted Skipper 7 Sulphur (sp) 8 Pearl Crescent 1 Red Admiral 1 American Lady 2 Common Ringlet 1 Eastern-tailed Blue
There were more butterflies at Breakneck Hill in Southborough than the other two sites, and my counts were thrown off by the (still) large number of Little Wood Satyrs (not as many as the last time I was there, but still at lest 50-100 throughout the property). Also, a good number of skippers flying energetically enough that I was not able to do an accurate count.
I saw:
3 Northern Cloudywing 1 Mourning Cloak 1 Monarch 6 Clouded Sulphur 8 Common Ringlet 6 Pearl Crescent 50-100 Little Wood Satyr
Skippers were plentiful, overall at least 25. From photographs I was able to identify:
European Skipper Peck's Skipper Long Dash Skipper Zabulon Skipper
