For comparison with NC, here is the South Carolina drought map, from this
morning (data through Tuesday):

https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?SC

As we can see, Wateree River HP/WMA is indeed in the pale orange Moderate
Drought region. Despite the decent numbers of grass skippers in Francis
Marion National Forest this spring, that area and all of the lower SC coast
is in Extreme Drought.

And the current drought map for all of the Southeast:

https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?Southeas=
t

So, NC is the only state north of Florida with the full-blown Exceptional
Drought now. Rain, please rain! The butterflies and especially their
hostplants need the rain, and rain also tends to cause pupa to eclose, as
we often see very fresh adult individuals a day or two after a rain event.
