Francis Marion National Forest, Berkeley County, SC. Forest road C-10-154, Coffee Swamp, walked 0.8 miles. Then FR 212 from Highway 45 north to FR204, stopped 4 times in 4 miles. June 18, 2026. 10:20 am -12:40 pm. Partly sunny. 90 F. Dennis and Wendy Allen.
Pipevine Swallowtail 1 Black Swallowtail 1 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, dark phase 1 Spicebush Swallowtail 4 Palamedes Swallowtail 62 unidentified swallowtails 12 Gray Hairstreak 1 Pearl Crescent 12 Red-spotted Purple 1 Monarch 1 Silver-spotted Skipper 1 Southern Cloudywing 9 Horace's Duskywing 17 unidentified duskywings 3 Clouded Skipper 2 Whirlabout 3 Byssus Skipper 2 Reversed Roadside-Skipper 1 Hummingbird Clearwing Moth 1 (FOY)
Tall white-pink thistle was used by all species except the following; Gray Hairstreak on Silphium sp., Pearl Crescents on Black-eyed Susan or in flight, Red-spotted Purple on the road. Red-Purple (mostly Horrid) Thistle all now with seed-heads. Some patches of Pluchea and Pickerelweed in flower but no butterflies. Some yellow sunflowers. First few Starry Rosinweed blooming with that becoming a major nectar source by mid-July.
