It is NOT attracting butterflies, I assume be= cause there are very few to attract. In prior years, this same plant would= attract a large number of butterflies. There have always been Variegated = Fritillaries, numbers of Common Buckeyes, Black Swallowtails, fresh Spicebu= sh Swallowtails, fresh Zebra Swallowtails, etc. Today the abundant Narrowleaf Mountain Mint on the paved drive from Route 5= 2 to the refuge headquarters was mostly deserted. There were a few Bumbleb= ees, Carpenter Bees, and Honeybees and almost no butterflies. I made sever= al passes over an hour or more to eke out what I am reporting. My day was = saved by a Dion Skipper nearly hidden in the Mountain Mint. Even at a dist= ance the bug looked too large to be a Fiery and I waited at least 10 minute= s to get a photo. The Dion is my 72nd species for 2026. The upcoming weather forecast has me doubtful about improvement over the ne= xt 10 days.
