Hello all--I saw a lone Great Spangled Fritillary on our meditation trail here at work. It was very fresh. It's the third one I've seen this year. All of them have been in the woods. They don't seem to be making it up to the main nectar sources out here which are butterfly bushes in direct sun. I have seen them it past years at the bushes. Are they staying in the woods because it is too hot? There are violets in the field between the woods and the bushes, so I am assuming that's where they are hosting. I don't think there are any violets in the woods because it is almost complete shade. It seems like a long way for them to go through the field to get to the woods. Have others seen GSFs in the woods that don't seem to be coming out to nectar? What else would they nectar on in the woods? Carion or animal dung? Thanks!
