Francis Marion National Forest, Berkeley County, SC. Drove FR 204 west from Wambaw Bridge and the length of FR 212 to Hwy 45 with 6 stops of about 15 min each. July 2, 2026. 10:00 am - 12:30 pm. Sunny, 85 F. Lingering very dry conditions. Dennis and Wendy Allen
Pipevine Swallowtail 4 Black Swallowtail 2 Easter Tiger Swallowtail 11 Spicebush Swallowtail 2 Palamedes Swallowtail 38 unidentified dark swallowtails 12 Gray Hairstreak 1 Pearl Crescent 5 American Lady 1 Common Buckeye 1 unidentified small satyr 1 Hoary Edge 1 Southern Cloudywing 3 Horace's Duskywing 8 Zarucco Duskywing 8 unidentified duskywings 4 Clouded Skipper 2
Black-eyed Susan's prevailed on FR204 with all Pearl Crescents, the American Lady, and some of both duskywings which were also on less abundant Silphium there. Almost all swallowtails and other species were on the now abundant Starry Rosinweed (Silphium asteriscus) along stretches of FR212. Some Blazing Star (Liatris sp.), Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium sp.), Marsh Mallow, Butterfly Weed, Sneezeweed, Ironweed, and fleabane (Pluchea sp.) in bloom but no butterflies using them.
