I ran a Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) in the NC portion of Great Dismal Swamp NWR on July 3, and the butterflies below were noted in Gates, Camden, and Pasquotank Co.'s, NC. It was hot and sunny, but we have had some storm-produced rainfall recently so there were some puddles. The main nectar source was buttonbush, with a few things on Brazilian vervain and Clethra that was just starting to bloom. Surprises were a Pipevine Swallowtail and the number of Cabbage Whites, including a conservative count of 11 along roads deep within the NWR, and a cloud of at least 45 counted quickly while driving on a highway adjacent to the Refuge in between stretches of the BBS route. I'm sure a triple digit count would have been no problem with more time spent in such areas.
