Good evening butterfliers,
Today, I ran two Carolinas Butterfly Monitoring Program surveys at Horton Grove Nature Preserve. They mowed a portion of the prairie last summer, which seems to have paid off because it's now packed with mountain mint, both P. muticum and P. tenufolium! While butterfly numbers weren't as high as I'd hoped, they were still pretty solid for the doldrums (and in spite of the sheer number of honeybees hogging the mountain mint, ugh). Here is my full list from both surveys + incidentals:
- Sleepy Orange - 5
- Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - 5 - Spicebush Swallowtail <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/380419270> - 1 - quite worn
- Gray Hairstreak - 1 - Eastern Tailed-Blue - 3 - Summer Azure - 2
- Common Buckeye - 1 - Pearl Crescent - 4 - Hackberry Emperor - 1 - Carolina Satyr - 1
- Silver-spotted Skipper - 2 - Horace's Duskywing - 9 - including one mating pair! <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/380418877> - Southern Cloudywing <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/380419345> - 1 - Common Checkered-Skipper - 1 - Fiery Skipper - 4
Happy butterflying, Ryan Chaffee Cary, NC
