This may be jus= t as well, since butterfly numbers have been down in general. Yet,= here in Asheville, despite keeping my yard watered and have gobs of bloomi= ng natives and plenty of high grasses, I'm lucky to get five species a day.= Anyway, we=E2=80=99ve decided to move the Cataloochee trip to August with = the hopes of better action then (both sign-up and butterfly). The address is 153 Smokey Park Hwy, Ashevil= le, 28806 (GPS: 35.564895, -82.629025). =20 We=E2=80=99ll explore the meadows of the Cataloochee Valley in the Great Sm= oky Mountains National Park. Easy walking at all the stops and a good chanc= e of seeing wild Elk. Several pre-park structures to explore including a ho= mestead and barn that attracts Swallowtail puddle parties. Entrance to the = park is free, but a parking tag is required for a fee. If you don=E2=80=99t= want to carpool with someone who already has a tag, you can buy one from t= he automatic fee machine on the road in ($5 for the day). It=E2=80=99s a lo= ng, windy road with no cell service, gas stations, or bathrooms, but well w= orth the drive. Bring a pack lunch. Target butterflies: American Copper and= Diana Fritillaries.
