Francis Marion National Forest, Berkeley County, SC. FR 212. Drove entire road (~6 miles), stopping to walk at 6 of the most flower rich stretches, each about 1/4 mile. July 23, 2026. 9:30 am - 12:45 pm. Sunny, 93 F. Dennis Allen Pipevine Swallowtail 9 Easter Tiger Swallowtail 2 Spicebush Swallowtail 2 Palamedes Swallowtail 7 unidentified dark swallowtails 4 Little Yellow 1 Pearl Crescent 2 Red-spotted Purple 1 Southern Cloudywing 4 Confused Cloudywing 1 Zarucco Duskywing 5 unidentified duskywings or cloudywings 4 White Checkered-Skipper 1 Little Glassywing 2 Delaware Skipper 9 Byssus Skipper 2 Twin-spot Skipper 1 unidentified dark, worn skippers 2 All identified swallowtails, 3 southern Cloudywings, 2 Zarucco Duskywings, and all skippers (except White-Checkered-) were nectaring on Starry Rosinweed (Silphium asteriscus). I scanned thousands of the likely 10,000 plus large yellow flowers to find 40 or so butterflies. Other species were mostly on the road or grass shoulders. Other conspicuous flowers were Sneezeweed, Black-eyed susan, Blazing star, Snow squarestem, Pluchea, and Rattlesnake master, but no butterflies associated with them. |
