charset="UTF-8" When I was checking my emails this morning, I saw one from Tom Austin, who is preparing a book on the butterflies of South Carolina with more detail about life history and other biology than the field guide for NC, SC, VA, and GA that was published in 2024. He said the record of Western Pygmy-Blue from a few days ago in SC caused a last-minute revision to the species! And, as a result he decided to check the other photos of "Eastern Pygmy-Blue" on iNaturalist. Eastern is the expected pygmy-blue along the coast, and apparently all but one were correct. But, Tom DID find one from Berkeley County (slightly inland and not containing salt marshes), from 2025, that had been vetted as Eastern, but which really is a Western: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/297336668 He sent the link to FL butterfly expert John Calhoun, who also agrees on Western, and soon followed by additional vetting as Western by Dennis Forsythe and me. Right now, it still needs another vetter as Western before it can be confirmed for the SC map for the species. Right now, you have to enter "Brephidium" or "Pygmy-Blue" and South Carolina to find it. So, SC now has TWO records for Western, and more importantly, this 2025 record, technically a first for SC, indicates that the species is not closely tied to salt "marshes". But, still it is near the coast and thus folks don't literally have to walk out into salt flats/pans to find it, as you typically must do for Eastern. No, you don't look for these species literally in the 3-4' tall Spartina alterniflora marsh grasses, but in the open salt flats where succulent flowering plants like saltworts and glassworts are found. Thus, keep looking coastally for both pygmy-blues, and at least in SC where both species are found, don't assume all are now Easterns!
