Though we had buckets of rain in July -- around 13", we have had about 0.06" of rain in August, as we watch the August showers stay to our west and east. Of course, the vegetation is pretty lush, and we aren't in a drought -- other than on dirt roads!! Here is what I saw in my hour of beating the heat and humidity from about 850-950, in southern Wake County: Spicebush Swallowtail 1 E. Tiger Swallowtail 2 Orange Sulphur 1 very fresh Checkered White *11 *-ish white sp. 2 as usual, a handful didn't stop, but the ones behind the church and at the Lake Wheeler Road corner were entered as Checkered, as all perched ones in these places were Checkereds. Ones farther west toward the right angle bend could have been Cabbage, but I saw none of this species perched Common Buckeye 1 usual to see a handful of Variegated Frits now, but ... Red Admiral 1 So -- diversity along the road continues quite low, owing to constant roadside mowing by NC State staff. They don't like to see flowers blooming near the fences. I did manage to see an adult and one juvenile Grasshopper Sparrow, in two separate territories.
