Hi Butterfliers.
I ran my Pollard count at Durant Nature Preserve on Monday, August 10 and for the first time this year had a fairly decent assemblage of butterflies. Swamp Milkweed, Sneezeweed, and Ironweed were primary nectar plants, some Buttonbush and Butterfly Pea in bloom, and Elephant's Foot just beginning to bloom.
I saw a total of 13 species.
Here are the numbers: E. Tiger Swallowtail- 16 on swamp milkweed and ironweed Pipevine Swallowtail- 1 Spicebush Swallowtail- 2 Sleepy Orange- 3 Cloudless Sulphur- 1, ovipositing on partridge pea Monarch- 6, two in courtship and another ovipositing on common milkweed Silver-spotted Skipper- 2 on ironweed Common Checkered Skipper- 1 on sneezeweed Fiery Skipper- 3 on sneezeweed Sachem- 1 on sneezeweed Clouded Skipper- 2 on butterfly pea Zabulon Skipper- 4 on butterfly pea and elephant's foot Least Skipper- 6
The Wake County Butterfly Count is this Friday- will be interesting to see results for this droughty then wet season. John Connors Raleigh
