Francis Marion National Forest, Berkely County, SC. FR 212 first 2.5 miles north from Highway 45. Drove with 4 stops of about 1/4 mile each near major patches of Starry Rosinweed. August 14, 2026. 11:15 am- 1:15 pm. Sunny, 90F. Dennis Allen, Georgetown. Pipevine Swallowtail 6 (all males) Black Swallowtail 1 (male) Spicebush Swallowtail 1 Palamedes Swallowtail 5 unidentified dark swallowtails Cloudless Sulphur 35 Sleepy Orange 2 Gray Hairstreak 1 unidentified hairstreaks 3 Little Metalmark 2 (FOY) Pearl Crescent 8 Painted Lady 1 Southern Cloudywing 1 Horace's Duskywing 1 (male) Zarucco Duskywing 1 (male) Clouded Skipper 1 Crossline Skipper 2 Southern Broken-Dash 17 Little Glassywing 2 Delaware Skipper 2 Byssus Skipper 1 Dun Skipper 1 Reversed Roadside-Skipper 1 Twin-spot Skipper 37 unidentified grass skippers 18 The continuing dense shoulder stands of Starry Rosinweeds (now at about 6 weeks) is finally hosting more skippers. All butterflies except Pearl Crescents, Little Metalmarks, sleepy Orange, and those swallowtails and Cloudless Sulphurs seen in flight were on Starry Rosinweed. Among other plants in bloom but not holding butterflies were: Southern Mountain-mint (Pycnathemum), Clustered Bushmint (Hyptis alata), Southern Winged Loosestrife (Lythrum lanceolatum), Sneezeweed ((Helenium sp.), Blazing Star (Liatris sp.). |
