Hello all,
The Pilot Mountain butterfly count is set for Monday August 24, 2026 (rain date Tuesday Aug 25. Sorry we can't do weekends the park is full).
We meet at 9am at the summit for a quick intro and short hike around the summit in one group. Then we head downhill and towards the Yadkin River stopping at state park properties along the way. There is a bathroom at the summit and pit toilet down by the river section. We usually have lunch at the Pilot Creek access before or after the hike there.
Bring lots and lots of water, gatorade, energy snacks, lunch and be prepared to hike on and off trail. Dress for ticks and spray for chiggers. The pace is usually slow as we are stopping to look at nectar and such, but it's always a long hot day. Participation withers as the heat increases so stay as long as you like.
If anyone wants to count on their own, there are plenty of areas inside the count circle that do not get covered.
I haven't had the heart to charge anyone the $3 naba fee since they get nothing in return and the $3 won't even get a gallon of gas. So it's my annual donation to naba and you will pay for it in sweat, and gas to get here...
Let me know if you are willing to help!
FYI the hanging rock and mayo river counts are on hiatus this year, but may return.
